The tricky part? While these surfaces might seem hard as rock, the wrong cleaning method can do serious damage. High-pressure washing, harsh chemicals, or quick fixes can shorten their lifespan. The good news: with the right mix of gentle detergents, biocides, and low-pressure steam, you can restore them safely and keep them looking their best. Let’s break it down.


Brick: Historic but Fragile


Brick is everywhere in the UK, from Georgian terraces to medieval churches. Older handmade brick especially is surprisingly fragile because it’s porous and often held together with lime-based mortar.


Common problems: White salt crusts (efflorescence), black pollution staining, moss and algae, and crumbling mortar.

How to clean it safely: Gentle detergents loosen the dirt, biocides clear moss and algae, and low-pressure steam (90–120 °C) lifts residues without scarring the brick.

What to avoid: Acid cleaners (often sold for brickwork) dissolve mortar and etch surfaces. High-pressure jets and sandblasting strip the brick’s protective outer layer, leaving it weak and porous.


Concrete: Durable but Prone to Stains


Concrete is used in everything from monuments and bridges to paving slabs. It’s stronger than brick but still porous, so it soaks up oils and supports biological growth.


Common problems: Oil and grease stains, black soiling from pollution, algae on damp surfaces, and rust marks from embedded metal.


How to clean it safely: Mild detergents handle everyday dirt, poultices draw out oil stains, and biocides tackle algae and moss. Low-pressure steam (100–130 °C) flushes out the pores and sterilises the surface.

What to avoid: Strong acids like hydrochloric or sulphuric, which weaken the cement. Aggressive degreasers containing caustic soda, which burn the surface. Sealing damp concrete, which traps moisture and leads to cracking.


Pavers: Decorative but Dirt Magnets


Whether they’re stone setts in a historic square or concrete blocks in a modern plaza, pavers look great but trap dirt and weeds in their joints.


Common problems: Weeds and moss in joints, patchy staining from traffic, white salt deposits (efflorescence), and loose joint sand.


How to clean it safely: Biocides kill off moss and weeds, detergents lift surface dirt, and steam at 90–110 °C clears out contaminants without shaking the pavers loose. After cleaning, joints can be refilled with kiln-dried sand or lime mortar to keep everything stable.


What to avoid: Bleach, which discolours stone and harms soil. High-pressure washing, which blasts out the jointing. Herbicides alone, which kill weeds but don’t deal with roots or staining.


Why Combine Chemicals and Steam?


Neither chemicals nor steam do the job alone. Chemicals loosen salts, oils, and organic growth. Steam rinses everything away, sterilises the surface, and avoids the need for scrubbing or blasting. Used together, they give a deep clean without damaging the material.
